First St. Addition
First floor renovation, second floor addition and an expanded garage. Rather than selling and buying a bigger house, this family decided to renovate and add much needed square footage. As families age and grow their needs change. These needs take on different forms. On this project additional living space and bedrooms were on top of the list. The first floor was renovated to add a dining room, laundry room, walk-in pantry and mudroom off the expanded garage. The second floor addition was designed to have four bedrooms, one being a master suite with walk-in closet and master bathroom. The second floor also has a home office which is essential in a modern home.
Design Factors:
Every project requires multiple meetings. The first being the initial meeting and second to review the schematic design. The interval between these two meetings there is communication with the client and time for the client to analyze their daily lives. Document their day from morning to night. This will inform the client and architect of what spaces or functions their home is currently lacking. It is the architect’s goal as problem solver to take this analysis along with the existing site and built conditions to develop a design that exceeds the clients goals and helps to optimize their lives. Meetings, client analysis and design all require the element of time. Project timelines all move at different paces. Communicating these timelines with the client and sharing progress along the way helps to relieve stress for all involved and increases the likelihood of success in the project.
